Proper Use of Collets
Proper utilization requires the tool to fill at least 80% of the depth of the collet. The most critical part of the collet is the mouth located at the bottom end, where the tool extends. Lateral pressure taken by the tool must be evenly distributed on all collet sections for accurate cutting. Adherence to the 80% rule is vital to prevent tool movement and breakage. In cases where the 80% rule cannot be followed due to inadequate shank lengths, using a filler or collet life plug of the same size as the shank can solve the problem of short shanks and prevent collet collapsing. Specific size collets are recommended for relative size shanks, including metric collets.
